Hawaii State Facts and History

Hawaii, nicknamed the Aloha State, is located in Oceania and is the only US state made up entirely of islands. How it got its name is still unknown, although people suggest different reasons for that.

It entered into the Union on August 21, 1959 and is the 50th state. It is the 8th smallest and 13th most densely populated state in the US. It encompasses the entire volcanic Hawaiian Archipelago, which comprises hundreds of islands over 1,500 miles. Pineapple, cane sugar, flowers, coffee beans and bananas are its chief products. Tourism is a major source of revenue for Hawaii. It was first visited by a British captain named James Cook in 1778 and named the Sandwich Islands.

As per the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Hawaii in 2000 was 1,211,537. It rose to 1,404,054 in 2013. This was an increase of 3.2% as compared to 1,360,301 in 2010.
