Online PALS, BLS ACLS Certification and Training

Also, BLS certification is a requirement for these professionals listed with the ACLS Class. Studies have shown that at least 12,000 children are rushed to an emergency room each year due to choking. Maine Facts and Health Statistics

Maine is the most eastern state in the United States, and more than 40 million pounds of lobster is caught off the shores of Maine and exported around the United States. It is home to Acadia National Park, and this is the second most visited national park in America. This state has over 33,000 square miles, and it became part of the Union in 1820.

Maine typically sees a high number of drownings each year, and from 2008 to 2010, over 30 people drowned off Maine’s shores. Drowning is the leading cause of death in children under the age of four, and most people don’t even realize it’s happening. There are also problems with air quality and the obesity rate, which hovers right around 28%.

Portland

Portland is the largest city in the state of Maine with almost 67,000 residents as of 2016. In 1786, Falmouth’s citizens broke away and formed a city named Portland. This city thrived until 1866 when a fire tore through the town and destroyed more than half of the buildings and homes. Portland is known for its Victorian architecture, and it has been part of the National Register of Historic Places since 1982.

In the years between 1987 to 1996, over 200 residents of Maine died, and this puts the state average at 1.8, which is higher than the national average of 1.5. If you’re working on one of Portland’s beaches, it is important to have a certification in at least CPR, but PALS or BLS certification would be ideal. You’ll have a better chance of spotting someone who is having difficulty in the water, and help them before it’s too late. Around one in every five people who drown are children under 14, and between 2005 to 2014, there were over 3,500 fatal drownings in the United States.

Lewiston

The second largest city in Maine is Lewiston with over 36,000 people. This city has been around since 1795, and it has one of the largest French speaking populations in Maine with 15% of the locals being fluent. Lewiston is home to 15 colleges and universities, and it has over 44 listings on the National Register of Historic Locations.

Obesity is on the rise in this city, with Maine being named the 24th most obese state in the United States. It has increased to 30% as of 2015, and this is more than double the 1990 rate of 10%. Someone who is obese has a higher risk of suffering additional complications like hypertension, cancers, and heart-related issues. This is why it is so important to have BLS and ACLS certifications. You’ll know what to do if someone needs help until EMS arrives.

Bangor

Bangor is the third largest city in Maine, and it has around 33,000 residents. This city has been around since the mid-1800s, where it was a key component in the shipping industry. There are a large variety of outdoor activities to participate in year round including skiing, hiking, sailing, and snowmobiling. The Bangor State Fair has been ongoing for over 150 years, and author Stephen King calls this city home.

Chronic diseases are a problem in Bangor. Things like chronic respiratory conditions, cancers, and diabetes are prevalent. Several of these conditions come back to preventable health conditions like obesity and smoking problems. If you went through an online BLS certification program, you’d be able to recognize the signs of a respiratory problem and assist them. Diabetes has more than doubled in Maine in recent years, and it shows little sign of stopping.

South Portland

South Portland has a population of over 25,000 people, and it has been around since 1898. South Portland is over 14 square miles, and of those 14 miles, 2 are water. South Portland is home to the largest shopping center in Maine, and thousands of visitors come to it each year. It is also home to Rigby Yard, which is the largest railroad yard in New England.

The air quality of South Portland is generally poor, and this is partially due to the pollution from the coal plants that travels through Maine’s air. This poor air quality can irritate conditions like asthma, COPD, and bronchitis. It increases the probability for a flare, and this is where an ACLS certification could come in to play. With all of these health problems, it is more important than ever to be able to recognize the signs of an asthma flare or breathing problem.

Biddeford

The final city on our list of the five largest cities in Maine is Biddeford with just over 21,000 people. Biddeford is one of the earliest European settlements in the United States, dating back to 1616. It is home to the University of New England, and it is currently one of Maine’s fastest growing commercial centers. The downtown section of this city has recently begun renovations, and the city has converted the old mills into retail stores, art centers, and cultural centers.

You can find things like diabetes and hypertension throughout Biddeford, with 9.4% of the residents reporting they had this diagnosis by a medical professional. Hypertension can increase the risk for heart problems like a stroke or heart attack. If you have ACLS certification from our online courses, you’ll be better prepared to help someone. The chances of a person surviving a heart-related issue outside of a hospital setting without help are just 6%, and this could improve if someone had the proper certification and training.

Maine CPR News: In August 2017 a woman was pulled from the bottom of a swimming pool and was unresponsive. Bystanders performed CPR until EMS arrived to relieve them.

A man suffered a heart attack in a Portland YMCA, and a bystander who had CPR training through the Red Cross kept him alive for ten minutes until help arrived. The man survived and is expected to make a full recovery.
