Information About the State of Massachusetts

The state of Massachusetts was admitted to statehood as the 6th state on February 6th, 1788. The name Massachusetts came from the Algonquin Tribe, and it means “near the great little mountain.” This state has a population of over 6 million people, and in 2013, it was ranked as the 14th most populated state in the United States. Massachusetts is also known by its nickname of the Bay State.

Although Massachusetts was ranked as one of the healthiest states in the nation at #3, it still has a higher than the national average for violence and substance abuse. In 2010, Massachusetts.gov released the top leading health factors for this state and they are:

Massachusetts also has generally poor air quality, and breathing Boston’s air was likened to ‘smoking five cigarettes a year.’ This state also has a smog problem or ground-level ozone.

Boston

The biggest city in the state of Massachusetts is Boston with a population of over 670,000 people. This city is home to the oldest park in the United States, Boston Common, and it dates back to around 1634. You can also find Fenway Park, and this city was also home to the first chocolate factory in the United States. According to the  US Census Bureau, in 2012 as many as 15.1% of Boston’s population walked to work on a daily basis. Boston is also the capital of the state of Massachusetts.

Boston ranks relatively low for air quality, scoring a 43 out of a 100 for air quality. The higher the ranking, the better off the city is. These rankings are based on ozone and particle pollution. The poorer the air quality is, the more exacerbated the symptoms of chronic respiratory problems can become. People who have been trained and received their BLS certification are taught to look for possible breathing problems and respond accordingly. The water quality was ranked at a 1 out of 100, and these are both worse than the national average. These statistics can exacerbate symptoms of chronic respiratory problems, as well as weakened immune systems from the bacteria found in the water.

Worcester

Worcester, MA is the second biggest city with a population count of over 184,000 inhabitants. This city is often referred to as the heart of the Commonwealth. Worcester was incorporated as a city in 1722. It is also home to the first insane asylum where mental health treatments were established.

This city has a rising fatality count for substance abuse. Since 2012, there have been 262 deaths attributed to overdoses in Worcester alone. This rate did drop slightly in 2016 from 2015, but it is still a large problem. If you had first aid training or your ACLS certification, you could assist someone who you found suffering from overdose symptoms until more help arrived.

Lowell

The city of Lowell has a population of over 110,000 people. The Lowell National Historical Park features over 5 miles of scenic canals and miles of walking trails. This city is also known as Mill City and Spindle City. Each year, this city hosts the Lowell Folk Festival, and this festival is the largest folk festival hosted in the United States.

The most common health conditions in Lowell are congestive heart failure, chronic respiratory issues like pneumonia, and diabetes. The heart failure and diabetes can be linked to the obesity rate of 24.3% for the entire state. If someone is going into a cardiovascular attack, it might take someone with ACLS certification and training to spot them. If this happens and it is spotted sooner, the person has a higher chance of making it to a hospital quicker and their chances of survival go up. The air quality in Lowell is higher than Boston’s air quality at 62/100, but this is still enough to irritate respiratory issues like pneumonia.

Brockton

Brockton, MA has a population of just over 95,500 inhabitants and was established in 1874. It is billed as one of the most diverse cities, as well as one of the most densely populated per square mile.  This city has a large array of museums to visit, and it is also known as North Bridgewater.

The biggest health concern in Brockton is conditions related to air quality. This city has a high level of ozone pollution, along with pollen and these two things can irritate chronic respiratory issues like pneumonia and bronchitis. On particularly high ozone pollution days, residents should consult the air quality before going outside. If you aren’t sure about the air quality, it is always a good idea to consult someone with BLS or ACLS certification and training like a medical professional or your local fire or police department. They will be able to help you figure out if it is wise or not for you to go outside. This will lower the risk of irritating their chronic respiratory problems.

New Bedford

The city of New Bedford was incorporated in 1787 and currently has just over 95,000 residents. It carries the nickname ‘The Whaling City,’ and this dates back to when this city was the most important whaling ports around the globe. This city is home to the large seven-station New Bedford Fire Department that was established in 1834.

The top four main health concerns in New Bedford are diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and depression. Between 2001 and 2003, there were over 32,000 reported cases of major depression in this city alone. As for high blood pressure and diabetes, those two conditions often go hand in hand with the obesity rate. Conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure can lead to worse issues like heart attacks or strokes. If you’ve had training in BLS or ACLS, you may be able to help get a person to the proper health care facility if they are feeling poorly and they’re exhibiting traditional signs of their condition worsening. Even with these health issue rates slowly falling, and Massachusetts is ranked as one of the healthiest states in the nation, it is still a major health concern.

2016 – Several school districts in MA have received the “CPR SMART School” certification after making it mandatory that students from 7th to 12th grade receive CPR training and certification. The classes will be taught as part of the physical education and health courses, with the teachers instructing the students in both CPR and AED training.
