February 5th, 2016–Jonathon Madrid, a student of Belen High School, passed awaylast yeardue to a head injury that was left untreated. Unfortunately, his family wasn’t able to get him the care that he needed because they were completely unaware of the life threatening signs that he was showing. CITIES IN NEW MEXICO

Albuquerque

Albuquerque has a population of 559,277making it the largest city in New Mexico. It’s located in the north central part of New Mexico bordering Rio Grande. The town was named after the 10thDuke of Albuquerque, Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva. “Albuquerque” comes from ‘albus quercus’ meaning “white oak” which could also be closely related to the fact that the region was known for their abundance of cork oak trees.

Along the eastern side of Albuquerque runs the Sandia Mountains which is Albuquerque’s biggest tourist attraction. Other tourist attractions include: The University of New Mexico, the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History, Albuquerque Biological Park, Kirkland Air Force Base, and Petroglyph National Monument. Las Cruces

Las Cruces,also known as “The City of Crosses”, has a population of 101,643 making it New Mexico’s second largest city. The city is located 225 miles south of Albuquerque, 48 miles northwest of El Paso, Texas and 46 miles north of Santa Teresa. The city is known for their beautiful mountainous landscapes of the Organ mountains, the Dona Ana Mountains, Robledo Mountains, and Picacho Peak.

Rio Rancho

Rio Rancho is the third largest and fastest growing city in New Mexico with a current population of 93, 820. The city was originally apart of the Alameda Grant before branching off and creating their own city establishment. Rio Rancho is now known as the “The City of Visions” for it’s plethora of new developments. It’s also known as Sandoval County’s biggest economic hub.

Rio Rancho broke off from the Albuquerque “neighborhood”in the 1990s to establish their own school and library systems and have plans to attract and develop more businesses within the area. The city has developed the downtown area to attract more visitors. Those new attractions include: a city hall building, a new University, a community college, a 4-screen movie theatre, a medical center, and their very own sports arena called ‘The Santa Ana Star Center’. Rio Rancho also hosted the National Speleological Society’s annual convention this past year in 2017.

Santa Fe

Santa Fe is New Mexico’s state capital and the fourth largest city with a population of 69, 204. Founded by Spanish colonist in 1610, Santa Fe is not only the oldest city in the state but the oldest state capital city in the U.S.The name “Santa Fe”is the Spanish translation for “Holy Faith”. Santa Fe is a popular city for visual arts, literature, media, music, dance, and opera. In fact, several professional authors reside in the city.

Some of it’s biggest tourist attractions include: the New Mexico State Capital, the St. Francis Auditorium, the Lensic Theatre, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Company, and the New Mexico History Museum. Majorannual events include: the Santa Fe Opera Productions, The Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Rodeo de Santa Fe, and the Fiestas de Santa Fe. Santa Fe was voted as one of the 10 best retirement places to live in the U.S. by CBS Money Watch and U.S. News in 2012.

Roswell

Roswell is the fifth largest city in New Mexico with a population of 48,411. The city contains several dairy farms and ranches, manufacturing and distribution centers, and is big in the petroleum production. However, Roswell it most popular for it’s alien-themed tourist attractions, stores, restaurants, and museums because of the UFO incident that occurred just 75 miles outside the city in the 1940s. Santa Fe is also home to one of the world’s largest mozzarella factories called ‘Leprino Foods’.
