Situated in Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of USA, New York is the fourth most populous and the seventh-most densely populated state in the country. The state is estimated to have nearly 20 million residents and in 2016 had more than 60 million visitors. There are 62 cities and 62 counties in New York, 10 of them are the original counties created following the British takeover. New York has the third-largest economy in the U.S. with financial services, health care and retail trade as the top industries. Chronic diseases such as heart disease, asthma and lung cancer have been attributed to the poor air quality. An estimated 2,700 deaths show a correlation between the fine particle matter in the air/pollution to the premature death. This number is 8x the number of murders in the city. The city, however, has been making a strong effort in the last 10 years to improve the quality of the air.

On October 11, 2016 David Martinez saved his co-worker’s life when she fell on the subway’s third rail. The third rail powers the train using 600v of electricity. He recalled an article from the Washington Post about a new lifesaving technique for people suffering from heart attacks. The technique is called “Hands-Only CPR” which uses only chest compressions to resuscitate the victim. Martinez had also watched a video created by the American Heart Association that had accompanied the article. He remembered that the compressions could be done to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” and sang the song while doing chest compressions. By the time the firefighters arrived, the victim was breathing. The president of the Transport Workers Union said that it’s very rare that a person who has come into contact with the third rail survives. The lucky victim was extremely grateful to Martinez for saving her life.
